for the same professional football team will teach anyone a little something
about teamwork. Former Dallas Cowboy powerhouse Ed “Too Tall” Jones will offer
this valuable insight on teamwork to attendees of the Annual Gentlemen’s Club
Owners Expo as he delivers the keynote address on Tuesday, August 25 at the
Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in
While Jones’ resume spans nearly two decades of football teamwork experience,
he’s found that the general guidelines of building a great team are always the
same – leaders must excel in every position within an organization to build a
foundation for success. He also notes that when it comes to leaders, you can’t
always predict where the next great leader will come from; he or she could come
from the shadows and outshine all those who are most expected to perform.
“If you are a good head coach, you know a leader when you hear or see them.
They surface on their own,” said Jones. “It’s important that once you find that
leader, that you sit him or her down and you tell them exactly the direction
that you want them to go as a team. You need someone in a leadership role who
will sweat and bleed with the rest of the team.”
Once the leaders are identified, it is important to inform them of how
essential their role is to the success of the club. Then, a club owner must
supply the tools and knowledge necessary for these leaders and the overall team
to succeed. By equipping leaders with these valuable tools, an owner is setting
him or herself up for big wins and can ensure that the club will run smoothly
and effectively, even in his or her absence.
“Any business owner who isn’t going to run their business on a day-to-day
basis, or who doesn’t really know the business well, needs to put someone in
place that knows the business,” said Jones. “As an owner, you don’t necessarily
have to be involved; you can just provide what it takes for your leaders and
your team to be successful.”
With a resume that includes being voted to the Pro Bowl three times during his
career, serving as a member of the “Doomsday Defense” squad of the 1970s,
playing on three NFC champion teams and being a 1978 Super Bowl winner, Jones
is no stranger to the patience and persistence it takes to build and maintain a
great team. Upon retirement from the NFL in 1989, Jones leveraged his expertise
in team building to a successful career as a motivational speaker. He has
appeared at events across the country in a variety of roles, including keynote
speaking, motivational appearances, autograph signings and appearances at
celebrity golf tournaments, among others.
